A Day In My Life: Balancing Motherhood, Work and My Handmade Business

Published on 27 February 2025 at 09:49

Starting and running a small business is not an easy task - especially when you are also juggling a part-time job and being a mum for two little ones!  If you have ever wondered what goes into balancing it all, here is a little peek into my daily routine.

7.00 AM - Morning Routine

I usually wake up to the sound of my youngest letting me know that a new day has begun! Mornings are all about getting ready for school, for nursery, having breakfast, packing bags and making sure everyone is out the door on time.

10.00 AM - Off to My Part-Time Job

I work as an order fulfillment specialist, which means I spend my mornings til early afternoons making sure customers get their orders efficiently and accurately. It is a job that keeps me organised and on my feet, but in the back of my mind I am always brainstorming my new designs and planning my next handmade project.

12.00 PM - Lunch Break and Quick Business Check-In

During my lunch break, I squeeze in a little business work - checking my socials, any messages from customers, uploading photos/videos and maybe sketching out a new design idea. Running a small business in the middle of everything else means learning to use every free moment wisely.

2.00 PM - Little Break and Family Time

After finishing work, I am ready to pick up my kids from school and nursery. Luckily, I do my part-time job from home, so I usually have a free half an hour for myself, have a cup of coffee and relax before the madness begins :)

4.00 PM - Afternoon Snack, Playtime, Handmade Business Time

Once the kids are fed, changed, and occupied, I dive a little into my small business tasks. This could be:

  • Cutting, sewing/hand sewing new baby clothing and accessories,
  • Personalising some items with hand embroidery,
  • Packing some orders,
  • Creating social media content to share my latest work,
  • Make a draft for my next blog post.

Since I work on short timetables, I have to be super efficient in my creative process. Some days I feel incredibly productive, but other days it is impossible to move forward when someone is interrupting me every five minutes...

6.00 PM - Dinner and Family Time

We always eat dinner together. We chat about our day and then go through the bedtime routine - baths, reading bedtime stories, cuddles and saying our good nights.

8.30 PM - Final Business Tasks or Relaxation

Once the kids are in bed, then I can move forward to where I left off earlier on that day. Sometimes I finish up an order, editing product photos/videos or schedule a post for social media. Other nights, I give myself permission to just rest with a glass of wine, watch series with my husband and fall asleep on the couch!

12.00 AM - Bedtime and Doing It All Again Tomorrow

After I wake up from my snooze in front of the TV, I am ready to head off to bed 😅 I feel incredibly tired at the end of every single day, but despite that, I love everything that I have and do. Balancing a part-time job, a handmade business and the kids is a challenge, but it is also fulfilling!

Are you balancing work, parenting and small business? How do you manage your time?
